Intersil Introduces Next-Generation High-Voltage MOSFET Driver for Notebook PC Processor Power
IRVINE, CA, January 22, 2002 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading provider of power management solutions for PCs, file servers and portable information appliances, today announced the ISL6205, a next-generation high-voltage MOSFET driver IC that saves board space and reduces costs by integrating components and logic circuits on-chip. Targeted for notebook PCs based upon the Mobile Intel® Pentium® 4 and desktop Pentium 4 processors as well as AMD Mobile Athlon or Mobile Duron processors, the ISL6205 driver IC works in combination with a processor specific controller to generate the CPU core supply.
The ISL6205 is designed to drive both upper and lower MOSFETs in a synchronous-buck DC-to-DC converter operating from the high voltages found in notebook systems. Notebook PC systems operate from battery and battery charger voltages that typically range up to 20 V in normal operation. The CPU core voltage is usually derived directly from these relatively high-voltage sources in order to maximize the power efficiency of the total system. The ISL6205 driver interfaces directly with all of Intersils Endura line of multi-phase PWM controllers.
The ISL6205 Power Solution
Intersils portable core power solution includes two to three ISL6205 MOSFET drivers controlled by one of several portable-optimized ISL6200-series PWM ICs such as the ISL6223. The choice of controller and number of drivers depends on the power requirements of the CPU being used in the platform. The entire Intersil solution offers lower part count with higher efficiency and reliability. ISL6205 Details
Manufacturers of Notebook PCs and other systems with high-voltage sourced CPU core supplies benefit from these ISL6205 features:
- Drives two standard N-channel MOSFETs in the synchronous-buck mode - P-channel MOSFET not required
- Up to 2 MHz switching speed allows smaller filter components
- Adaptive shoot-through protection provides circuit optimization
- Phase voltage over -5 to +25 V range for application flexibility
- 8-lead SOIC package to conserve board space
- Patented three-state PWM inputs prevent negative transients on the output voltage when it is being shut down, thus eliminating the need for an additional Schottky diode to protect the CPU from negative voltages
- Pin-for-pin compatible with existing Intersil HIP6600-series MOSFET drivers
- 5 V to 12 V gate drive for the lower MOSFET
- Supply under-voltage protection
- Core power for Intel portable and desktop Pentium 4, AMD portable Athlon or Duron processors
- High-frequency low-profile DC-to-DC converters
- High input voltage DC-to-DC converters
The ISL6205 is available now. Price per ISL6205CB-T IC, 8-lead SOIC package is $1.05 in thousand unit quantities. Higher quantity pricing is available.
