Intersil Introduces Industry's First TFT-LCD Programmable Buffer with I2C Interface
-- New EL5126 enables TFT-LCD gamma voltages to be programmed in LCD display and next generation smart panels
IRVINE, CA, September 17, 2002 - Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today introduced the industry's first TFT-LCD programmable buffer with an I2C interface tailored for liquid crystal displays (LCD) and next generation smart panel designs. Intersil's EL5126 programmable reference generator simplifies the development process by allowing designers to tailor the voltage transmission curve, or gamma curve, for different LCD display applications.
"Targeted at next generation smart panel designs, these new programmable buffers save our customers development time by allowing them to adjust the gamma curve depending on customer requirements, end-user selections, or based upon the characteristics of a given panel," said Michael Jennings, director of strategic marketing for Intersil's Elantec Video and Amplifier Products. "The EL5126 also replaces current buffer topology and resistor ladders, eliminating the lengthy selection process for the resistors used to generate the gamma voltages."
EL5126 Technical Description
The EL5126 provides a versatile method of providing the reference voltages that are used in setting the transfer characteristics of LCD display panels. Intersil's EL5126 features 8-reference outputs, each programmable to a 10-bit resolution. Each channel of the device is capable of swinging to either power supply rail and has a very robust 30mA continuous output current rating. The EL5126 also features an output range of up to 18 volts, while the input side can operate from 3 volts to 5 volts. Programmable via an I2C serial interface, the EL5126 can be controlled either by a microcontroller, an ASIC within a smart panel application, or by adapting functionality of an existing timing controller.
Intersil's EL5126 complements the EL5825 - an 8-channel device that incorporates a three-wire interface - and is the latest device in a broad family of Intersil products targeted at TFT-LCD applications, including PDAs, automobile displays, desktop PC monitors, and notebook PC and LCD-TV flat panels. Complementary Intersil products include gamma buffers, VCOM amplifiers, DC/DC converters and programmable buffers.
