Intersil Introduces Highly Integrated PWM Controller For Mobile Graphical Processing Units

MILPITAS, CA, June 8, 2005 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced the release of the ISL6269, a Single Phase PWM Synchronous Buck Controller for Mobile Graphical Processing Units (GPU). The ISL6269 requires fewer external components than competing products on the market today which results in a smaller implementation area and lower manufacturing cost. It includes onboard MOSFET drivers, internal 5V LDO, integrated boot diode and a PWM audio frequency filter. Through this integration, the ISL6269 provides a flexible power solution that is easy to implement for GPUs in notebook PCs and other battery operated devices.

The ISL6269 also features Intersil’s Robust Ripple Regulator (R3) technology to provide superior dynamic response to input voltage and output load transients. Intersil’s R3 technology combines the best features of fixed-frequency PWM and hysteretic PWM while eliminating many of the associated shortcomings. With this technology, the ISL6269 is able to provide 1 percent regulation accuracy from –10 degrees C to 100 degrees C. A resistor divider is used to program the output voltage setpoint. The ISL6269 can be configured to operate in forced-continuous-conduction-mode (FCCM) or in diode-emulation-mode (DEM), which improves light load efficiency.

The ISL6269 offers additional features such as over-current protection, short-circuit protection, over-voltage protection, thermal protection programmable frequency and power good output that provide smooth, reliable operation under extreme conditions. The ISL6269 has a 1.5ms digital soft start that can be started at a pre-biased output voltage. The PWM frequency is programmed using a single resistor and can be changed on the fly. The over-current protection circuit measures positive flowing current through the output inductor. A single resistor programs the over-current and short-circuit set points.

The ISL6269 offers customers a flexible GPU power solution for both embedded and detached graphics systems. With a small package foot print, the ISL6269 will enable the users to place this controller any where on their board for better thermal management and efficiency.
