Intersil Incorporates Fox Oscillator on PRISM 2.5 Reference Design
Fox customizes their F4106 oscillator for Intersil’s small form factor reference designs
IRVINE, CA, July 31, 2001 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), the world’s leading developer of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), and Fox Electronics, a leading supplier of frequency control products, today announced that Intersil has incorporated Fox’s new low-profile F4106 oscillator on its PRISM® 2.5 and 3 WLAN reference designs.
IRVINE, CA, July 31, 2001 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), the worlds leading developer of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), and Fox Electronics, a leading supplier of frequency control products, today announced that Intersil has incorporated Foxs new low-profile F4106 oscillator on its PRISM® 2.5 and 3 WLAN reference designs.
The F4106-440/1.4 is a custom oscillator from Fox Electronics F4100 series of crystal oscillators. The F4106-440/1.4 oscillates at 44 MHz, is a mere 1.4 mm in height, and operates over a range of 2.7 to 3.3 V, as specified for the PRISM 2.5 and 3 reference designs.
"From the first PRISM wireless LAN reference design, Intersils mantra has been to press for higher integration, lower chip count and smaller size while maintaining high Wi-Fi performance," said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager of Intersils Wireless Networking Business Unit. "Foxs cooperative effort to provide us the oscillator we needed helped us meet emerging market demands for smaller size."
The PRISM 2.5-based reference design provides all technical information necessary for the manufacture of a complete WLAN adaptor in the form of a small mini-USB card that measures approximately 2-1/3 x 1-1/2 inches. Such cards are ideal for embedded WLAN applications. PRISM 3 incorporates a Zero-IF (ZIF) architecture which allows what is called "direct down conversion" of radio frequency signals, enabling low-cost, high performance wireless networking solutions targeting consumer applications.
The Global Wireless Market Embraces PRISM WLAN Technology
"Intersil is the number one manufacturer of wireless LAN chipsets and has been a driving force behind the success of WLANs," said a May 2001 WLAN report from Cahners In-Stat Group. Since introducing the PRISM WLAN chip set in 1996, over 50 of the industry-leading companies including Actiontec, Alcatel, Cisco, Compaq, 3Com, Dell, D-Link, Linksys, Nokia, Nortel, Samsung, Scientific-Atlanta, Siemens, SOHOware, Sony, SpectraLink, Symbol and Zoom have incorporated PRISM chips in more than 100 product designs. PRISM technology is designed to comply with the IEEEs 802.11 global standard, and Intersil is a founding sponsor of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), whose Wi-Fi brand is a mark of compatibility for 802.11-based systems.
