Intersil First to Deliver Dual Hot Plug Power Controller for New PCI Express Bus

-- N-channel MOSFET control and fast-response protection for both 12-V and 3.3-V power buses


MILPITAS, CA, March 26, 2003 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced the industry’s first dual-rail hot-swap controller targeted primarily for the new PCI Express bus. The new Endura™ ISL6161 allows boards to be safely inserted and removed from live backplanes. This new IC controls both 12-V and 3.3-V power buses, offering programmability and fast-response protection. In addition to PCI Express, the ISL6161 is also well suited for general power distribution control and other Hot-Swap and Hot Plug applications.

The ISL6161 dual-rail controller offers a rich feature set that includes: under-voltage monitoring and “power good” notification, programmable over-current detection and fault isolation, programmable current regulation, programmable current limit time to latch off, adjustable turn on ramp for soft-start and fast one-microsecond response to a dead short. This dual controller offers customers a high degree of integration that results in savings in board space and balance of materials costs. Intersil’s IntelliTrip™ Protection Technology
The ISL6161 provides Intersil’s IntelliTrip dual-level current limiting technology for precise current control and protection. For over-current (OC) protection, the voltage across either sense resistor is monitored and compared to its user-programmed current-regulation (CR) voltage threshold value. When the voltage exceeds the CR threshold, the controller enters the current regulation mode, holding the current at the programmed level until either the OC event passes, in which case the MOSFET is again fully enhanced and the C(TIM) capacitor is discharged, or the programmed time out period expires, in which case both the FETs are latched off. The IC responds to a severe OC load (>3X programmed current limit) by turning off the FET in less than 1 us. The controller is reset on the rising edge on the ENABLE-BAR pin and is turned on by the ENABLE-BAR pin being driven low.
