Intersil Develops Advanced Four-Port Solution to Add Voice Capabilities to Broadband Networks

-- Solution provides quick low-cost migration to voice over broadband

IRVINE, CA, May 30, 2002 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced collaboration with Texas Instruments (TI) to provide a POTS solution for voice-over-broadband (VoB) access. This flexible and cost-effective voice-over-broadband four-port solution enables manufacturers and service providers to quickly deploy enhanced voice capabilities on existing broadband platforms.

The solution is based on Intersil’s new ISL5587 dual ringing subscriber line interface circuit (SLIC) IC. Two ISL5587 dual SLICs interface directly with TI’s TP2450 programmable voice codec. The resulting complete voice interface is used in network interface devices, small and medium enterprise gateways, and customer premises devices such as home routers and gateways, DSL and cable modems, and multimedia terminal adapters.

“TI’s DSP and broadband system expertise combined with our voice interface experience has yielded a complete and flexible solution that allows broadband providers to cost-effectively meet the needs of the growing VoB markets,” said Mike Althar, vice president of Intersil’s Analog Solutions Group. “The Intersil VoB-4™ solution is designed to work with existing equipment, which eases the immediate costs of deploying voice over broadband systems and provides a migration path to next generation voice services. Service providers can rapidly expand their voice capabilities with these programmable solutions, thus increasing revenues as user demand rises.”

“Our new programmable codec family, starting with the new TP2450, draws on our DSP and broadband system-level expertise to provide customers a flexible solution that makes it easier to add POTS capabilities to broadband access devices,” said Bill Simmelink, general manager of TI’s VoIP Business Unit. “The joint solution’s programmability contributes to easier board design and offers flexible transhybrid balancing and impedance matching for a truly global solution.”

Highly Flexible VoB-4 Solution – ISL5587 RSLICs and TP2450 Codec
Two ISL5587 dual SLICs and one TP2450 programmable four-channel codec provide a flexible four-port solution. Only a single 3.3-V power supply is needed. The entire Intersil plus TI voice interface offers the lowest power dissipation in the industry. This enables line-powered applications and extends the charge life of backup batteries, significantly reducing costs for service providers and OEM’s. The programmable voice interface helps manufacturers decrease system costs by integrating passive components and facilitating the use of a single design for different countries.

Support for the ISL5587 and the TP2450 includes analog reference designs, joint Intersil and TI evaluation platforms, individualized customer support and industry-leading Telogy Software™ products. The ISL5587 and TP2450 are currently sampling with volume production expected in early 2003. Prices will range from $5 to $6 for the dual-channel SLIC and $7 to $8 for the quad-channel codec, depending on volume.
