Intersil Delivers Industry's First Two- to Four-Phase Controller to Power Upcoming AMD Athlon and Opteron processors with Hammer Technology
-- Intersil Endura IC reduces space and bill of materials while offering reliability and scalability
IRVINE, CA, October 14, 2002 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced that its new ISL6559 is the industrys first two- to four-phase power controller IC designed specifically to power the upcoming AMD Opteron and AMD Athlon processors with Hammer technology. Intersils advanced Endura ISL6559 controller-based power solution provides two- to four-phase scalability along with cost, space and power efficiency.
The ISL6559 controller offers AMD and Intersil customers scalable and flexible solutions to meet advanced AMD-based platform core power needs, said Rick Furtney, vice president and general manager of Intersils High Performance Analog Product Group. We have worked closely with AMD to ensure that the ISL6559 offers the compatibility, cost effectiveness and performance required for AMDs advanced 64-bit processors. We are honored to play a key role in support of these world-class CPUs.
The Intersil ISL6559 two- to four-phase power controller is optimized for our AMD Athlon and Opteron processors with Hammer technology, said Ed Gasirowski, director of AMD Infrastructure Enablement Group. Intersil has been a consistent innovator of highly reliable and cost-efficient power solutions benefiting AMD customers with better overall system performance.
Intersils Endura Power Solution for the New AMD Opteron and AMD Athlon Processors
The Intersil Endura solution to power AMDs next-generation processors is based on the new ISL6559, the industrys first two- to four-phase PWM controller optimized to power the soon-to-be-released Athlon and Opteron processors. This robust controller interfaces with Intersils MOSFET drivers, which includes the single-channel HIP6601B, HIP6603B and HIP6604B and dual-channel HIP6602B. The ISL6559 is offered in a 28-lead SOIC or 32-pad 5 x 5 mm Quad Flatpack No leads (QFN) package and is loaded with features that provide protection, precision, high converter efficiency, and the lowest bill-of-materials cost.
Notable features of the ISL6559 include: precise differential remote output voltage sensing, Dynamic VID technology for on-the-fly VID changing, 5- or 12-V supply operation, 1% accuracy, digital soft start, 4 MHz output voltage ripple frequency, programmable droop voltage, threshold-sensitive enable input, and a pin-adjustable reference offset. MOSFET on-resistance is used for current sensing to save space and component costs.
The ISL6559, ISL6559EVAL1, and ISL6559EVAL2 evaluation platforms and a complete reference design are available now to assist engineers with solution evaluation and design-in. The ISL6559EVAL1 is a VRM-style evaluation module, and the ISL6559EVAL2 is an embedded evaluation board. Both are 100% compliant to the new AMD Opteron and Athlon power specifications.
