Intersil Delivers First IGBT Featuring Unclamped Inductive Switching Capability
Targets high-voltage, high current power circuits
PALM BAY, FL, December 17, 1999 Intersil Corporation today introduced its new family of switching mode power supply (SMPS), N-Channel IGBTs with unclamped inductive switching (UIS) capability. The advanced 600-Volt (V) IGBT family delivers high current density capability resulting in increased power supply power density. The devices are designed for power supply circuits where voltage can increase for short periods of time due to line transients.

An industry first for punch through (PT) IGBTs, Intersils 600V SMPS IGBT family is designed with UIS capability. As a result, the IGBTs can handle transients well above maximum breakdown voltage. The UIS rating is achieved by optimizing the N-base region through a carefully controlled process. The IGBTs are MOS gated, high-voltage switching devices combining the high input impedance of MOSFETs with the low on-state conduction loss of bipolar transistors.
Intersils UIS SMPS IGBT devices function as alternatives to power MOSFETs in high frequency, switchmode power converters. A standard MOSFET with five times the active area can be outperformed by Intersils UIS SMPS IGBTs. The IGBTs also reduce board space, component count and package size. Designers employing Intersils 600V UIS SMPS IGBTs improve system efficiency and power density and reduce system costs.
