PALM BAY, FL,April 25, 2000 Intersil Holding Corporation (NASDAQ:ISIL), a leading developer of silicon technology for integrated communications applications, today announced a partnership with M.S. Kennedy Corporation of Cicero, NY. The alliance will result in a family of direct current to direct current (DC-DC) converter modules designed to power satellite-based broadband communication systems.
M.S. Kennedy Corporation was carefully selected by Intersil to provide the technical expertise required in fabricating complex hybrid microcircuits that are essential in providing power to commercial and military communication satellites. Power hybrid microcircuits combine two or more microcircuit elements. Currently, Intersil fabricates space qualified metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistors (MOSFETs) and power management integrated circuits (ICs), collectively known as Intersils Star*Power family. Under the partnership agreement, M.S. Kennedy Corporation will assemble, screen and test Star*Power DC-DC converter modules utilizing the latest equipment and processes to achieve cost effective and highly reliable high-performance hybrids.
"We are pleased to announce our partnership with M.S. Kennedy," said Andy Khayat, Product Marketing Manager at Intersil. "The alliance enables Intersil to participate in the next level of integration, where multiple devices are included in a single unit. We are now strategically placed in the forefront of satellite power architecture."
"Working together, we will greatly enhance power management systems in communications satellites," said Greg Overend, vice president of marketing at M.S. Kennedy Corporation. "Commercial and military satellite designers will now have access to the most efficient and reliable power hybrid microcircuits in the industry."
Intersils DC-DC converters are new additions to Intersils Star*Power family of radiation hardened products that are designed to withstand space radiation environments and utilize Intersils power system design expertise. The new product family supports popular input voltages (28V, 70V and 100V) and output voltages (3.3V, +/-5V, +/-12V and +/-15V), reflecting spacecraft design trends towards higher DC bus voltages. Intersils use of Radiation Hard Silicon Gate (RSG) process for all Star*Power ICs mitigates total dose and low dose rate effects. Additionally, the offering will be hardened to a broad range of potentially highly destructive energetic heavy ion effects in the space environment.
M.S. Kennedy Corporation is fully certified to Class K and Class H of MIL-PRF-38534 and ISO-9001 by the Defense Supply Center, Columbus. The specification outlines industry requirements and accepted levels of performance for hybrid microcircuits in space applications. M.S. Kennedy Corporation is one of only seven hybrid manufacturers certified by Defense Supply Center, Columbus for Class K hybrid production.
About Star*Power
Star*Power products include radiation hardened power MOSFET devices and power management integrated circuits. The power management IC offering includes pulse width modulators, voltage references, voltage regulators, MOSFET drivers and comparators. These ICs are hardened to total dose levels of 300krad(Si) and to various energetic ion related single-event effects. The Star*Power MOSFET line includes two product series: Star*Power MOSFETs and Star*Power Gold MOSFETs, each spanning six voltage ranges from 30V to 250V. Star*Power MOSFETs are optimized for ON resistance and superior total dose radiation performance. Star*Power Gold MOSFETs are optimized for gate charge and single-event effects.
