Intersil Continues Lead in Power Innovation for Wireless LAN
-- Intersil delivers industry's only fully integrated power solutions for Wireless LAN~-- New triple-output IC offers highest efficiencies along with space and cost savings
MILPITAS, CA, November 24, 2003 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced the ISL6413 triple regulator IC to power Wireless LAN chip sets. This new power IC is designed specifically to offer high efficiency, low cost and reduced parts count, along with reduced board space. The ISL6413 includes one power-saving, high-efficiency PWM, two low-noise low-dropout (LDO) linear regulators and a reset for the baseband processor/media access controller.
"It was just one year ago that we introduced the ISL6411, the industrys first triple LDO to power Wireless LAN chip sets," said Rick Furtney, Vice President and General Manager of Intersils High Performance Analog Product Group. "Today, we are announcing a new power IC that offers even more to the WLAN markets. The ISL6413 leads all other WLAN power solutions for space, thermal and power efficiencies. We are committed to providing WLAN and other Broadband markets with the best possible power solutions to preserve reliability and give our customers a strong competitive edge."
The innovation represented by the ISL6413 is an enabling factor for size, power, and cost reductions of Wireless LAN products across the board including embedded Wireless solutions in access points, notebook PCs, PDAs and smart phones as well as plug-in cards of ever-decreasing form factor. Key to the success of this new power IC is the small, yet highly thermally efficient, quad flat no-lead (QFN) package. This tiny low-profile 4 X 4 mm package is designed to rapidly transfer heat to the PC board and away from the IC. Combined with this thermal efficiency is the high power efficiency offered by the PWM regulator that results in cool operation and extended battery life in portable applications. This IC reduces current consumption from a 3.3-V supply by as much as 100 mA when compared to an LDO power solution. In addition, a reset function and extensive circuit protection functions are built in.
