Intersil is the supplier of Endura power management solutions for all Fujitsu Siemens Computers VR9.X-based platforms and now continues as preferred provider for all new VR10.X-based PC platforms.

Intersil Endura Power Management Solution for VR10-based Platforms
Fujitsu Siemens Computers selected Intersils Endura ISL6556ACR PWM controller IC combined with HIP660XBCR MOSFET driver ICs to provide the VRD10.X CPU core power solution. The controller comes in the tiny 32-pad 5 X 5 mm Quad Flat No-lead (QFN) package and the drivers are offered in the 16-pad 4 X 4 mm QFN package that makes possible a very space- and power-efficient design. This solution offers the industrys lowest bill of materials and enables "cut-and-paste" CPU core regulator designs that quickly and economically transfer from one VRD10.X motherboard model to the next.
The ISL6556A is a two- to four-phase synchronous-buck controller that uses interleaved timing to multiply channel ripple frequency and reduce input and output ripple currents. Lower ripple results in fewer components, lower component cost, reduced power dissipation, and a smaller implementation area. The ISL6556A utilizes differential voltage sensing and adjustable reference voltage offset to regulate the output voltage. The RDS(ON) current-sensing method is used to measure current in each phase and generate droop current. An external negative temperature coefficient compensation circuit can be used to completely nullify the effect of RDS(ON) temperature sensitivity to ensure the accuracy of droop and output voltage regulation.
The entire solution offers ±0.5% system accuracy over life, load, line and temperature with differential remote voltage sensing and adjustable reference voltage offset. Intersils Dynamic-VID technology enables seamless on-the-fly 6-bit VID step voltage changes specified for VR10.X platforms. The ISL6556A can be a 12-V-only CPU core controller, thereby eliminating the requirement for an additional voltage source to generate power for the chip.
The Intersil Endura ISL6520A regulator IC was selected to provide DDR memory core power regulation. The ISL6520A provides simple, single feedback loop, voltage-mode control with fast transient response. The output voltage can be precisely regulated to as low as 0.8 V, with a maximum tolerance of ±1.5% over temperature and line voltage variations. A fixed frequency oscillator reduces design complexity, while balancing typical application cost and efficiency. Digital soft start eliminates an external capacitor.
