Intersil Announces World's Smallest High Voltage Input (28V) Charger for Single-cell Li-ion or Li-polymer Batteries
--The ISL6294 is in production with top tier cell phone manufacturers~--Ideally suited for cell and smart phones, PDAs, and mini-disk, multimedia and MP3 players
MILPITAS, CA, February 23, 2005 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, announced today a new battery charger with high voltage inputs in an extremely compact 2 mm x 3 mm DFN package. The ISL6294 is a highly integrated solution that utilizes a constant current (CC)/constant voltage (CV) charging profile, which is required by single-cell Li-ion or Li-polymer batteries. The device accepts input voltages up to 28V but is disabled when the input voltage exceeds the over-voltage protection (OVP) threshold of 6.8V (typical). This prevents excessive power dissipation and enhances charger system safety. The 28V rating eliminates the need for the over-voltage protection circuitry typically required by devices with lower input voltage ratings.
"Intersil has solved three critical issues that handheld product manufacturers typically encounter in their battery management designs lack of space, the need to improve reliability and safety, and the need to continually reduce total solution cost," said Arman Naghavi, director of Handheld Products at Intersil. "The industry-leading 28V input rating of the ISL6294 allows designers to remove the large, costly OVP circuitry required to protect against input voltage surges caused by the power grid or by non-OEM counterfeit wall adapters. Input over-voltage incidents can cause a significant rate of field failures for battery chargers, resulting in customer dissatisfaction and costly warranty returns."
The ISL6294 charges a Li-ion or Li-polymer battery using a CC/CV profile. The CC mode charge rate is set with an external resistor (Iref). The CV mode output is fixed at 4.2V. If the battery voltage is below a typical 2.55V trickle charge threshold, the ISL6294 charges the battery with a trickle current of 19 percent of Iref until the battery voltage rises above the trickle charge threshold. Fast charge CC mode is maintained at the rate determined by programming Iref until the cell voltage rises to 4.2V. Upon reaching 4.2V, the charger enters CV and the output voltage is regulated at 4.2V +/-1 percent.
End-of-charge indication is programmable using an external resistor, although charging is not terminated. This feature provides the designer the flexibility to allow charging to continue or to terminate charging by interfacing the status and enable pins to a microcontroller.
The ISL6294 features Thermaguard technology, a charge current thermal fold-back feature which guarantees safe operation in space-limited designs where thermal dissipation is high, by limiting the die temperature to 107 degrees C through the reduction of charge current. The device consumes less than 1uA of leakage current from the battery when no input power is attached or the charger is disabled.
