Intersil Announces Ultra-Low Distortion, Quad Analog Switch for Cell Phone and Handheld Consumer Electronic Products

MILPITAS, CA, February 3, 2005 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced a true bi-directional, ultra-low resistance (0.24 ohms) quad analog switch that offers precise switching capability from a single supply over a wide range along with high-speed operation (turn on = 15ns / turn off = 13ns). The ISL8499 is especially well suited to high-end cell phones and other portable media players with MP3 capability due to its ultra-low total harmonic distortion (0.002 percent), low operating supply voltage (1.65V), low power consumption (2.7uW max), and its small packages. The device is built in an advanced sub-micron CMOS process and has at least 9kV of ESD resistance.

The ISL8499 is a guaranteed break-before-make quad single pole/double throw (SPDT) analog switch. The ISL8499 operates from a single voltage supply over a range from 1.65V to 4.5V. When operated from a nominal 3.0V supply, the device has a typical resistance of 0.24 ohms and a typical R(ON) flatness of 0.06 ohms, making it ideal for use in low distortion audio paths such as in MP3 players, cell phones, and CD audio devices. Available in a small QFN package, Intersil’s new switch is ideal for space-constrained applications such as portable battery-powered consumer electronic products and cell phones.

The ISL8499’s higher supply voltage capability allows it to be powered directly off a Lithium Ion battery supply, thereby eliminating the need for an additional LDO regulator in many applications. This device has a wider operating supply voltage range, lower R(ON) resistance, better R(ON) flatness and R(ON) match than devices available in the market. It also has more than double the ESD withstand level and significantly lower R(ON) at lower supply voltages such as 1.8V. This combination of features and performance yields a higher value part, yet at a competitive price.

The ISL8499 is available now in either a 16-lead 3mm x 3mm TQFN package or a 16-lead TSSOP package. The suggested price in 10,000 unit quantities is $1.30 for each IC in the TQFN package and $1.25 for each IC in the TSSOP package.
