Intersil Announces Two New 3-in-1 Controllers Targeting Broadband and General Purpose Applications
--The ISL6441 and ISL6443 enable multi-rail power regulation with a single IC, satisfying the demands of broadband gateway applications
MILPITAS, CA, February 24, 2005 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, announced today two high-performance, triple-output controllers optimized for converting wall adapter, battery or network intermediate bus DC input supplies into the system supply voltages required for a wide variety of broadband gateway and general purpose product applications. The ISL6441 and ISL6443 are high-efficiency, cost-competitive, 3-in-1 PWM solutions for providing two synchronous buck-regulated voltage outputs and a linear controller output.
"With the introduction of the ISL6441 and ISL6443, Intersil now offers the industry's broadest range of triple-output PWM and linear controllers targeting many high-growth applications," said Richard Powers, director of marketing for Intersil's General Purpose Power Products. "The ISL6441 enables power solutions for residential gateways that include ADSL modems, Ethernet routers and IEEE 802.11 access points. The ISL6443 operates at a lower switching frequency than the ISL6441 to enable an even higher efficiency and higher maximum duty cycle, while providing the same outstanding features and regulated voltage outputs as the ISL6441."
These versatile triple regulators each have two independent synchronous-rectified PWM controllers with integrated 5V gate drivers and a linear controller to provide precision regulation of up to three voltage rails. Each output has an internal one-percent-accurate reference specified from 40 degrees to +85 degrees C for regulating any voltage down to a minimum 0.8V. The two PWM controllers operate 180 degrees out-of-phase, reducing input capacitance.
The primary difference between the two devices is that the ISL6441 operates at 1.4MHz PWM switching frequency, while the ISL6443 operates at 300kHz. The 1.4MHz PWM switching frequency is ideal for ADSL modems and applications that demand the smallest passive components, while the 300kHz switching frequency is optimum for satellite and cable set-top boxes, home media servers, digital TVs and networking infrastructure applications. Although optimized for broadband gateway applications, the devices' features are beneficial in any application where a monolithic 3-in-1 regulator can satisfy the power requirements.
Each PWM controller has separate soft-start and enable functions. The soft-start and enable pins can be controlled independently or they can be tied together. The PGOOD function indicates when all regulators have completed their soft start and the outputs are operating within specified accuracy limits. Both of the ICs also include an integrated phase lock loop device that allows for bi-directional frequency synchronization of multiple ISL6441s or ISL6443s.
Designer Alert: The ISL6443 triple-output controller is now available on Intersil's iSim on-line simulation tool. The iSim simulation tool provides Intersil's customers with a design environment for validating their application solutions using Intersil's high performance power management products.
