Intersil Announces Radiation Hardened Source Driver

— Provides current required to control switching
— Designed for commercial and military satellite communications applications

IRVINE, CA, July 17, 2000 — Intersil (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading provider of power management solutions for today’s integrated communications applications, today announced a radiation hardened (Rad Hard) eight-channel, source driver specifically designed for use in military and commercial satellite applications.

IRVINE, CA, July 17, 2000 — Intersil (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading provider of power management solutions for today’s integrated communications applications, today announced a radiation hardened (Rad Hard) eight-channel, source driver specifically designed for use in military and commercial satellite applications.

The source driver provides the current required to operate mechanical relays and switching devices that interface between low level logic and high current loads. The device has eight logic-level inputs that control corresponding outputs, each capable of providing up to 300 milliamps (mA) of drive current. The output voltage equals the supply voltage that has a user-determined range of 5V to 80V. Intersil’s octal source driver, part number IS-2981RH, is the latest addition to the growing family of Intersil’s Star*Power™ products.

"Intersil’s new Rad Hard source driver offers designers a readily available, radiation tested and guaranteed option for use in satellite applications," said Brian Alaskiewicz, applications engineer for space products at Intersil. "Intersil eliminates the need for up-screening and radiation testing. Lower costs and cycle times help the device become a more attractive alternative to bulky and less reliable non-Rad Hard discrete solutions."

Innovative design techniques are used to achieve extremely stable performance over temperature and post-irradiation. Dielectric isolation processing and vertical device architecture provide latch-up immunity and a greatly reduced sensitivity to enhanced low dose rate effects, ensuring high reliability in harsh radiation environments.

All of the source driver’s parameters are tested and guaranteed to 100krad(Si) over the full –55c to +125c military temperature range. The device features a wide 5V to 80V operating supply voltage range, making it a suitable replacement for several commercially available industry standard types. It also features a time averaged output current of 300mA per channel. Any number of outputs may be paralleled to increase drive current capability.
