Intersil Announces New, Ultra-Small DC-DC Regulators with Integrated FET for Portable Applications
— EL7530 and EL7531 generate a regulated output voltage from Lithium Ion battery; provide up to 94% efficiency at full current loads of 600 mA and 1 A, respectively
MILPITAS, CA, April 22, 2004 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog solutions, today announced two new single-chip synchronous buck DC-DC regulators with integrated power FET transistors.
The EL7530 and EL7531 are targeted at digital cameras and other portable products such as test instruments and PDAs that are powered from a single Li-Ion or multiple NiMH or alkaline battery cells. The devices operate and switch automatically from pulse frequency mode (PFM) to pulse width modulation (PWM) modes to offer outstanding efficiency over the full low-to-high load current range.
The tiny 0.145 square-inch total BOM footprint combined with up to 94 percent efficiency makes these regulators ideal for powering space-critical applications in portable, battery-operated devices. With only 120 µA quiescent current in PFM mode and internal soft-start, they provide the performance required for the standby mode and inrush current conditions for a variety of USB-powered applications. Using an integrated oscillator, the EL7530 and EL7531 operate at a high 1.4 MHz switching frequency, thus needing smaller inductors and external components than do other regulators. Additionally, a sync pin allows for synchronization to an external clock at up to 12 MHz, enabling placement of the switching noise outside of bands critical to the application.
Intersils EL7530 and EL7531 deliver 600 mA and 1 A continuous output current, respectively, and operate from input voltages of +2.5 V up to +5.5 V over an ambient temperature range of 40 degrees C to +85 degrees C. The devices are available in a compact MSOP10 and 3x3 mm DFN10 packages and require only eight components to provide a complete DC-DC step-down (buck) converter. A simple resistor divider sets the output voltage from a minimum of 0.8 V to a maximum of nearly Vin. Other features include a shut-down mode in which the device only draws 1 µA of supply current, an external enable control to turn the device on or off, and a power good output signal, which can indicate to another IC that the supply voltage has reached the desired level.
Kaveh Parsi, director of marketing for Elantec power products, said, The EL7530 and EL7531 represent Intersils fourth-generation integrated FET DC-DC step-down (buck) regulators. They deliver improved efficiency, lower minimum input voltages, and increased continuous output power capability. These two devices are the first generation of general-purpose PFM/PWM regulators from Intersil and offer an excellent regulation solution complementing the lithium ion battery management ICs available from our handheld products group.
The EL7530 and EL7531 are finding uses in numerous applications including USB-connected Wi-Fi modems, handheld scanners, and handheld communication devices. They are the first parts in a new family of ultra-small footprint, low-cost, integrated FET DC-DC regulators Intersil is launching for 0.6 amp to 3.0 amp applications. With integrated output FETs and internal compensation, these devices make it extremely easy to design a robust and efficient power supply. In addition, Intersil offers its customers a high degree of applications support, along with demo boards, sample parts, and technical assistance to assure that customers achieve the maximum performance and most cost-effective solution possible, according to Parsi.
Availability and Pricing
Both devices are available now in production quantities with short lead times. Prices are given for 1,000-unit volume. The EL7530 and EL7531 are offered in a 10-pin MSOP package and priced at $1.13 and $1.61, respectively. Datasheets, application briefs, and demo boards are available now.
