Intersil Announces New Ringing SLIC Tailored for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) Applications
Brings POTS functionality to broadband access products
– Provides high voltage ringing signals without ring generator or relay circuitry
PALM BAY, FL, March 9, 2000 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL) announced today the availability of a new Ringing Subscriber Line Interface Circuit (RSLIC) that integrates voice capability for residential broadband access and enterprise data router products. When utilizing Intersil Corporation’s new RSLIC for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), broadband interface designers benefit from the only single chip RSLIC to offer guaranteed 100-volt operation with low standby power at 80 milliwatts (mW).
PALM BAY, FL, March 9, 2000 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL) announced today the availability of a new Ringing Subscriber Line Interface Circuit (RSLIC) that integrates voice capability for residential broadband access and enterprise data router products. When utilizing Intersil Corporations new RSLIC for Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), broadband interface designers benefit from the only single chip RSLIC to offer guaranteed 100-volt operation with low standby power at 80 milliwatts (mW).
"With the HC55185, Intersil further solidifies its position as a leading RSLIC supplier for growth applications," said Christopher Ludeman, product marketing manager at Intersil. "We allow designers a choice of standard product telephony line circuit solutions, using codecs available from multiple suppliers, thereby lowering the cost to the user."
The HC55185 RSLIC-VoIP is the latest addition to the RSLIC18TM family from Intersil. The device provides power to the phone, detects off-hook conditions and transmits the ringing signal. An integrated ringing function eliminates the necessity for the ring generators and electromechanical relays that are required with non-ringing SLICS. It meets all the requirements of the Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) interfaces in voice and data routers, cable modems and set top boxes. The HC55185 also meets the telephony requirements for Voice over DSL access multiplexers, Wide Area Network (WAN) integrated access devices and VoIP gateway products.
The HC55185 RSLICVoIP comes in a number of product grades ranging from 100V supply voltage capability with 58dB longitudinal balance to 75V supply voltage capability with 53dB longitudinal balance. The device generates sinusoidal, trapezoidal and square wave ringing signals. It also features polarity reversal and a battery switch that allows for the implementation of two supply voltages so that high voltage can be utilized during ringing signal generation, and low voltage supply can be used during the speech phase of the call. As a result, the power consumed and the heat generated by the line card and router is minimized. The HC55185 also provides a number of self and loop test features such as two-wire loopback and a high voltage test access switch. These allow residential service providers, who may be providing voice over cable modem or voice over digital subscriber line (VoDSL), to perform crucial tests that help ensure maximum "up-time" for access lines.
