Intersil Announces Complete Endura Power Solution for SDRAM and DDR SDRAM-based i845 Chip Set Motherboards

-- Endura™ ICs provide the lowest-cost and most easily implemented power systems for i845 boards

IRVINE, CA, December 11, 2001 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading provider of power management solutions for PCs, file servers and portable information appliances, today announced that Intersil has a complete power system solution for the i845 chip set motherboards that use SDRAM and double data rate (DDR) SDRAM memory. Intersil’s Endura™ power ICs and reference designs have been optimized to provide customers with highly-reliable low-cost full-board power solutions that are relatively insensitive to layout and can therefore be easily implemented on multiple motherboard designs, thus offering additional savings in engineering and time.

The i845 chip set for Intel® Pentium® 4 processor motherboards is designed to provide control for Synchronous Dynamic Random Access Memory (SDRAM) modules and DDR SDRAM. SDRAM memory is much lower in cost than alternative DRAM technologies. This allows the initial cost of the computer and cost for memory upgrades to be lower.

“Demand for PCs that use SDRAM and DDR SDRAM memory modules is very high, especially in the consumer markets,” said Rick Furtney, vice president and general manager of Intersil’s Analog Business Unit. “Intersil’s Endura products offer complete power solutions that have been specifically designed for direct power interface with the Pentium 4 processor, i845 chip set and all ancillary power systems across the motherboard. Our products and power solutions are in full compliance with VRM specifications and provide our customers with the lowest-cost, most reliable and efficient solution possible.”

“We anticipate our customers’ needs by working closely with the world’s leading computer microprocessor suppliers,” said Cindy Drapcho, Intersil’s director of Desktop and Server Power Solutions. “Our reliable and power-efficient total-board power solutions have made us the world’s leading PC, workstation, and file server power solution provider.”

Endura Power Solutions Across the Board
Like pieces of a puzzle that fit tightly into place, Intersil has designed Endura power ICs and total solutions that meet all motherboard power specifications and interface requirements. Endura solutions are optimized for the highest power efficiency and reliability.

The across-the-board power solution for i845 chip set motherboards includes the Endura HIP6301, or HIP6311A, multiphase PWM controller with HIP6601A or HIP6602A MOSFET drivers for processor power, HIP6500 series multiple-output Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) controllers and ISL6500-series regulators for all other on-board systems including the i845 chip set, memory modules, graphics card and PCI slots, I/O ports, and peripheral devices.

The efficiency and voltage precision offered by Intersil’s HIP6300 series four-phase controllers and HIP6600 series MOSFET drivers for Intel Pentium 4 core supplies is the best available. Intersil’s four-phase solutions operate at over 80 percent efficiency and at load currents up to 160A. The Endura ISL6311A precision controller is the world’s only four-phase controller that has a 0.5 percent voltage reference specification that exceeds the requirement for next-generation Intel Pentium 4 processors.

Endura devices allow for easy duplication of designs and layouts from one Pentium 4 motherboard model to another, dramatically reducing time to market and helping to establish the Pentium 4 as a high-volume, mainstream processor.

The HIP6500-series ACPI controllers provide precise regulation of all the voltages needed to keep motherboard sub-system components “awake” in the power-saving ACPI stand-by modes. The ISL6500-series regulators complete the Endura power system solution by addressing the power needs of the graphics card slots, DDR memory and the DDR termination bus.
