Intersil and IDT Announce Octal Voice Access Solution for Enterprise Markets

— Eight-port programmable solution saves customers cost, space and time to market

IRVINE, CA, June 25, 2001 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a leading provider of silicon technology for wireless access and communications analog markets, and Integrated Device Technology, Inc. (IDT) (NASDAQ: IDTI), a leading communications IC provider, announced today a new space- and cost-saving High-Density 8-port (HD8) voice access solution for enterprise markets.

The HD8 voice access solution is the result of a collaborative effort between Intersil and IDT that combines their decades of engineering and telecom expertise in the joint development of evaluation boards, reference designs and collateral materials that provide quick integration of space-saving and programmable voice access ports for enterprise telecom systems.

Built around IDT’s fully programmable IDT821068 octal CODEC and Intersil’s HC55185 micro lead frame (MLF) ringing subscriber line interface circuit (RSLIC), the HD8’s state-of-the-art packaging technology allows thermal management of significant amounts of power dissipated in densely packed designs. HD8 greatly reduces the amount of system space and power needed for the voice interface and provides all the tools necessary to develop a foreign exchange station (FXS) plain old telephone service (POTS) interface for the converging broadband enterprise market.

Applications for HD8 include short-to-medium-loop access platforms such as high-density routers, multi-dwelling units (MDUs) served with voice and data access equipment based on HDSL, digital loop carrier remote terminals that support voice over frame relay (VoFR) or voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) and private automated branch exchanges (PABX).

HD8’s programmable features include: resistive or complex 2-wire impedance matching and trans-hybrid balancing, transmit and receive gain setting, constant current DC loop feed, off-hook and ring trip detection thresholds, transient loop-current limiting, ring voltage and frequency adjustment to accommodate the differing requirements of various geographical end markets, on-hook transmission and caller ID tone generation, loop start, ground start, polarity reversal, and low-power operation. The feature richness of the HD8 solution provides unparalleled global application flexibility.

The HC55185 is one of the newest members of Intersil’s RSLIC18™ family and is a full-function ringing SLIC specifically designed for high-density integration as found in the HD8 solution. The MLF-format features include onboard ringing generation, low standby power consumption (75V, 65mW), programmable transient current limiting, integrated MTU DC characteristics, low external component count, silent polarity reversal, pulse metering and on-hook transmission, tip-open ground-start operation, balanced and unbalanced ringing, and thermal shutdown with alarm indicator.

IDT’s IDT821068 Fully-Programmable Octal CODEC
The IDT821068 is a feature-rich, programmable 8-channel PCM CODEC with on-chip filters. The integration of features within the CODEC allows for greater flexibility for the designer, as well as conservation of board space, reduced system cost and accelerated time to market. Additionally, this octal CODEC is the highest-density, fully programmable, voice CODEC available on the market and is part of IDT’s new CODEC family, which includes two quad CODECs. Besides m-Law/A-Law analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog conversions based on ITU-T G.711 – G.714 specifications, the IDT821068 also provides one FSK generator, two programmable tone generators (which can also generate ring signals), one programmable Teletax Signal generator, and two programmable chopper clocks that can be used in conjunction with a switched mode power supply (SMPS) controller circuit for generation of the high voltage supplies necessary for operation of the HC55185 ringing SLICs.
