IRVINE, CA, September 27, 2000 Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), the worlds leading provider of silicon technology for Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs), today announced that AbsoluteValue Systems is one of four partners exhibiting cutting-edge wireless networking products this week at its booth at Networld+Interop 2000 in Atlanta, Ga.
At Intersils booth (#4147), AbsoluteValue will allow users first-hand experience with a new 11 megabit-per-second (Mbps) Wireless LAN Access Point that connects users of Linux-based PCs and laptop computers to a wired network. Linux is a fast-growing, Unix-based operating system being deployed as an ideal computing platform for mobile computing applications.
"Our partnership with AbsoluteValue underscores our commitment to make wireless network connectivity a reality for all types of computing devices and platforms, " said Larry Ciaccia, vice president and general manager of PRISM Wireless Products at Intersil. "The scalability of Linux makes it an attractive operating system platform for emerging handheld Internet appliances that are hitting the market and were proud to deliver its wireless capability with our PRISM technology. "
Other booth partners include Alcatel (wireless home DSL gateway), SpectraLink (wireless Voice over Internet Protocol), and Sygate (wireless ISP sharing software). Throughout the booth, customer products from Cisco, Samsung, Sony, Casio, Hewlett Packard, Hitachi, Mitsubishi, Fujitsu and others will be displayed and demonstrated.
Visitors to Intersils booth will witness live demonstrations of customer products performing Voice-over-Internet Protocol (VoIP), wireless transmission of DVD movies, interactive games, wireless Internet browsing and small wireless Internet appliances, including wireless digital camcorders, palmtops, laptops and Webpads. All products utilize Intersils 802.11- and 802.11b-compliant direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) technology.
Adoption of PRISM WLAN Technology
Since introducing the PRISM WLAN chip set in 1996, over fifty companies have incorporated PRISM chips in more than 100 product designs. In a May 2000 report, the Cahners In-Stat Group called Intersil "the dominant force in the WLAN chip set marketplace with their PRISM chipsets holding the majority of market share. " PRISM technology is designed to comply with the IEEEs 802.11 global standard, and Intersil is a founding sponsor of the Wireless Ethernet Compatibility Alliance (WECA), whose Wi-Fi brand is a mark of compatibility for 802.11-based systems. PRISM chips are used in WLAN systems from industry-leading companies including Alcatel, Nokia, Siemens, Cisco, Compaq, 3Com, Dell, Nortel, Samsung, SpectraLink, Symbol, and Zoom.
