Intersil Adds Two New ICs to High-Voltage MOSFET Driver Family for Notebook PC Processor Power

-- New Intersil Endura MOSFET drivers simplify design, save space and reduce costs~-- Synchronous-buck drivers for high-to-low-voltage single-stage conversion in computer systems

IRVINE, CA, July 30, 2002 – Intersil Corporation (NASDAQ: ISIL), a world leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions, today announced the addition of the new Endura™ ISL6206 and ISL6207 ICs to their high-voltage MOSFET driver family optimized for portable power applications. These next-generation high-voltage driver ICs simplify designs, save board space and reduce costs by integrating components and logic circuits on-chip. Both drivers are compatible with a wide variety of CPU core power controllers and are optimized to power all popular CPUs in new and next-generation notebook or tablet PCs.

The ISL6206 and ISL6207 are designed to drive both upper and lower MOSFETs in a synchronous-buck DC-to-DC converter operating from the high voltages found in notebook systems. Notebook PC systems operate from battery and battery charger voltages that typically range up to 20 V in normal operation. The CPU core voltage is usually derived directly from these relatively high-voltage sources in order to maximize the power efficiency of the total system. Both drivers interface directly with all of the multi-phase PWM controllers in Intersil’s Endura line, which include both the ISL6223 (optimized for AMD mobile CPUs), and the ISL6215 (optimized for Intel® mobile CPUs).

The ISL6206 and ISL6207 Power Solution
Intersil’s portable core power solution includes two to three ISL6206 or ISL6207 MOSFET drivers controlled by one of several portable-optimized ISL6200-series multiphase PWM ICs such as the ISL6223 or ISL6215. The choice of controller and number of drivers depends on the power requirements of the CPU being used in the platform. The Intersil controller-with-drivers solution offers lower parts count and lower overall cost than competing solutions. ISL6206 and ISL6207 Technical Details
  • Drives two standard N-channel MOSFETs in the synchronous-buck mode
  • Up to 2 MHz switching speed allows smaller filter components
  • Phase voltage over –5 to +36 V range for application flexibility
  • Patented three-state PWM inputs prevent negative transients on the output voltage when it is being shut down, thus eliminating the need for an additional Schottky diode to protect the CPU from negative voltages – Outputs can be tri-stated
  • Internal bootstrap Schottky diode
  • Adaptive shoot-through protection provides circuit optimization
  • Strong drive capability – ISL6206 sinks 1.1 A on lower MOSFET, ISL6207 sinks 4 A
  • ISL6207 has Enable pin for reduced power consumption
  • Small 8-lead SOIC package to conserve board space
  • 5 V supply and gate drive
ISL6206 and ISL6207 Applications
  • Notebook, tablet and desknote PCs
  • Servers and workstations that require high-voltage drivers
  • High-frequency low-profile DC-DC converters
  • High input voltage DC-DC converters
  • High-current, low output voltage DC-DC converters
ISL6206 and ISL6207 Pricing and Availability
Both drivers are available now. Price per ISL6206CB-T IC, 8-lead SOIC package is $0.98 in thousand unit quantities. Price per ISL6207CB-T IC, 8-lead SOIC package is $1.00 in thousand unit quantities. Higher quantity pricing is available.

Intersil + Elantec Means More for Our Customers
Intersil Corporation is a global semiconductor leader in the design and manufacture of high performance analog and wireless networking solutions. The acquisition of Elantec Semiconductor, Inc., expanded Intersil’s product portfolios to address four fast growing markets – flat panel displays, optical storage (CD and DVD recordable), power management and wireless networking. Intersil brings added customer value in providing complete silicon, software and reference design solutions to new products that enhance the computing experience for people wherever they live, work or travel.
