MELBOURNE, FL., June 15, 1999 The Harris PRISM® WLAN Chip Set has been chosen as a key element for an entirely new line of Nokia Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) products that promise to bring mobile data and voice to the enterprise, small office/home office (SOHO) and Internet Service Provider markets. Nokia announced its intention to be a leader in the wireless LAN business during the Networld + Interop show in Las Vegas.
"Nokias commitment to enter the wireless networking arena is a huge step forward for this market," said Ron Van Dell, vice president and general manager of Harris Semiconductors Communications Products Business. "Its entry into this market underscores the growing perception of wireless as the logical complement to todays wired networks. Furthermore, Nokias brand recognition and established success in marketing small wireless devices will undoubtedly help to lead this growing market toward much broader acceptance of wireless appliances."
Harris PRISM WLAN Chip Sets are incorporated in Nokias initial wireless data products, including an Access Point (AP) and WLAN adapter cards. These devices provide wireless connectivity in the 2.4 GHz ISM band, transfer data at rates up to 2Mbps and comply to the worldwide IEEE 802.11 standard.

Harris and Nokia have also co-developed SMAC (software medium access controller) technology. The MAC layer handles the interface between the radio (called the PHY layer) and the computer. As a result of that effort, Harris will introduce a SMAC (the HFA3840) in September; the part is currently sampling with key customers. Nokia will use the new SMAC, plus Harris PRISM II Chip Set in the next line of Nokia 802.11 High Rate 11Mbps compliant products that will bring "wireless Ethernet" to the market.
"The importance of wireless solutions in corporate environments is constantly growing. In the future, companies need newer, more effective and higher speed wireless LAN solutions," said Reijo Paajanen, senior vice president of Nokia Wireless Business Communications. "With Nokias expertise and Harris technology, we can develop very advanced solutions for our customers in this rapidly developing market."
