MELBOURNE, FL, February 1, 1999 Harris Semiconductor has developed a new, dual-channel D/A converter suited for high performance wireless systems. The HI5628/6s
8-bit resolution and 60MSPS data rate gives wireless system designers a competitive market advantage with lower power consumption and integration by providing two channels for processing I and Q signals.
The HI5628/6 has independent data inputs and matched gain on analog outputs to simplify processing I and Q wireless signals. The HI5628/6s dual channels are ideal for instrumentation design where multiple channels are required, in addition to reducing the crosstalk between channels. The device is equip with a small 48-pin Thin Quad Flatpack that saves significant board space, making it suitable for portable applications.
The HI5628/6 compliments Harris HI5662 Dual 8-bit A/D converter and the PRISM Full Duplex chipset to provide an end-to-end solution for wireless system designers. Despite its advance features, the HI5628/6 is competitively priced against single D/A converters.
The HI5628/6 consumes 165mW per channel when used with a +5V supply and a mere 54mW when used with a +3V supply. To further reduce power consumption, a power down mode is provided to reduce standby power needs to less than 1mW. The +5V+3V power-supply operation eases power supply system design and integration with high-speed +3V DSP processors found in the market today.
The HI5628/6 can convert two, 8-bit parallel words into an analog current in less than 8ns. The analog output pin can drive 2 to 20mA and a 50ohm load. Any analog output waveform can be reconstructed with a minimum amount of distortion and spurious noise. The output full-scale-current can be set by an external resistor. The high quality internal voltage reference is very stable over the full 40 to 85oC industrial temperature range.
High performance D/A converters are ideal for communication applications such as direct digital synthesis (DDS), frequency synthesis, I and Q modems, multilevel QAM systems and wireless local loop systems. It is also utilized in test equipment and in medical imaging systems such as ultrasound where multiple channel D/A converters are desired.

The HI5628 is now available in two different speed grades, HI5628/6IN (60 MSPS) and the HI5628IN (125MSPS). Packaged in 48-lead TQFPs, the HI5628/6 is available from stock for $6.73 in quantities of 100s.
The HI5628 family is another example of Harris Semiconductor's company-wide focus on high-speed signal processing for communication applications. Harris D/A converter line covers the resolution scale from 8- to 14-bits and from 20 to 500MSPS. In addition to data converters, Harris addresses the entire signal processing chain with a portfolio of linear, mixed-signal, DSP ICs optimized for high-speed and multimedia application-specific products. End-markets include wireless communications, video and image processing, high-speed cable communications and test and measurement equipment.
