Harris Flash ADCs Enable High-Performance LCD Video Applications

— High performance, low power features ideal for flat-panel SXGA LCD monitor design

MELBOURNE, FL, April 20, 1999 – Harris Semiconductor today announced a new family of 8-bit analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) optimized for digitizing RGB video graphics with the highest possible dynamic performance. The four chips, code-named the HI3200 family, deliver the world’s fastest conversion rate of any solution, integrated or discrete, currently on the market for LCD video applications.

With 120 and 160 megasamples-per-second (MSPS) encode rates and full-power analog bandwidth of 250MHz, the HI3200 family can support display resolutions as high as 1280 x 1024 at 85Hz, with sufficient input bandwidth to accurately acquire and digitize each pixel. Harris’ 120MSPS HI3200 converters – the HI3246 and HI3256 – are well-suited for XGA LCD monitors that support display resolutions of 1024 x 768 pixels. The 160MSPS versions – HI3276 and HI3286 – can deliver the dynamic performance and high display resolution support needed for SXGA flat-panel LCD monitors (1280 x 1024 pixels).

The HI3200 family requires only a +5V supply, effectively minimizing system cost and power dissipation. The clock outputs interface directly to TTL, ECL or PECL logic and will operate with single-ended inputs. The user may select 16-bit demultiplexed output or 8-bit single channel digital outputs. The demultiplexed mode interleaves the data through two 8-bit channels at one-half the clock rate. Furthermore, operation in demultiplexed mode reduces the speed and cost of external digital interface, while allowing the ADC to be clocked to the full 160MSPS conversion rate.

Fabricated with an advanced bipolar process, Harris’ new ADCs are available in two space-saving packages. The 120MSPS HI3246 and HI3256 and the 160MSPS HI3276 and HI3286 are available in 48-lead MQFP and LQFP packages.
