Harris Announces High Resolution, Dual-Channel DAC for High-End Communications Systems
12-bit HI5828 delivers highly accurate processing of I and Q signals
MELBOURNE, FL, April XX, 1999 – Harris Semiconductor today announced a high resolution, dual channel component to its CommLink family of high speed, high performance and low-power CMOS digital-to-analog converters (DACs). The HI5828 is a dual-channel DAC tailored for the high-speed transmit section of high-end communication systems. With 12 bits of resolution and a high throughput rate of 125+MSPS, the HI5828 gives communications system designers the edge in performance and integration by providing two channels for processing I and Q signals.

Harris new converter maintains superb AC performance with a wide Spurious Free Dynamic Range (80dBc typ.) for pure signal reconstruction and low harmonic distortion (75dBc typ.). And the HI5828s 12 bits of accuracy, ultra high conversion rate (125+MSPS), and exceptionally clean spectral performance make it suitable in quadrature-based modulation schemes including wireless local loop, basestations, cellular, multilevel QAM systems and QPSK modems. The new device also significantly reduces crosstalk by achieving 80db channel isolation of the two matched DACs located on the same die.
In wireless local loop systems and basestation communications applications, several protocols AMPS, TDMA, CDMA and wide-band CDMA are utilized to transmit both voice and data. Transceivers for these systems rely on pure spectral operation to transmit a signal onto an encrypted spread spectrum carrier. High performance D/A converters are used in the transmit side in combination with an upconverter or an NCO.
Harris device runs on a single +5V or +3V supply and utilizes 350mW per channel at 5V and consumes 180mW at 3V making it suitable for portable applications. With two matched channels and a 1.2V internal reference in a small LQFP package, the HI5828 allows the communications designer to reduce overall system complexity and size.
Price and Availability
Packaged in 48-lead LQFPs, the HI5828IN is now available is sampling quantities, with full production slated for this summer.
