Elantec Semiconductor Introduces Its Newest Laser Driver IC

The EL6244C enables OEMs to design faster optical disk drives


MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA, November 30, 2000 -- Elantec Semiconductor, Inc. (NASDAQ: ELNT), a leader in high-performance analog ICs, today unveiled its newest high speed laser driver IC ideally suited for the design of a faster optical pickup unit (OPU), an integral component of CD-R/W (read/write) drives. The EL6244C joins Elantec's next-generation family of laser diode driver ICs setting the standard in the rapid-growth CD-R/W optical disk drive market.

The EL6244C integrates the APC (automatic power control) amplifier with the three current channels needed for the read, erase, and write laser drive power levels. These three laser power levels are compliant with the Orange Specification Standard for CD-R and CD-R/W write strategy formats.

Pin-compatible with Elantec's EL6288C laser driver, theEL6244CU adds an automatic turn-off of the integrated high frequency modulation (HFM) oscillator during write-channel enables, thereby reducing laser read noise and eliminating the need for an external oscillator enable signal. This integration shortens signal routing, minimizes component count, and lowers overall production costs. As a result, the savings in board space and design time facilitates the design of more compact OPUs, such as those required by for the newest slimline CD-R/W models.
