Elantec Semiconductor, Inc. Introduces The EL6259C Newest Version Of The Optical Storage Industry's Leading Laser Driver Solution For CD-R/RW And DVD Disk Drive Markets

Single-Chip Monolithic Design Enables High Performance Solutions that Reduce System Costs and Save Board Space

MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA, January 5, 1999 -- Elantec Semiconductor, Inc. (NASD: ELNT), a leader in high-performance analog ICs, today introduced the EL6259C, a lower noise, pin-compatible version of the EL6257C. The EL6259C is a pin-compatible upgrade to the industry standard EL6257C, the industry¹s first highly-integrated monolithic laser diode driver IC which has been in production for two years in a 24-pin QSOP package.

The EL6259C conforms to the latest CD-R/W and DVD rewriteable disk write format standards and offers industry-standard functions and compatibility to enable next generation laser driver applications in CD-R, CD-R/W drives and DVD rewriteable drives, including DVD-RAM, DVD+R/W, DVD-R/W, and MMVF (multimedia video file).

The EL6259C is sampling now in the 24 pin QSOP package. Production will begin in January. The EL6259C integrates four (4) current channels used for the read, erase, bias and write laser power levels with a high frequency modulator ( HFM ) oscillator and a high speed power output current driver. The innovative integration reduces board space, component count, design time and allows flexibility to optimize the design.

In the PC industry, standards compatibility is everything and the EL6259C offers a simple, easy to use solution that conforms to the emerging CD-R/W and DVD rewriteable format markets."

Mr. Sacarisen continues, "The most difficult design for the optical disk system is the high performance analog design of the optical pick-up unit (OPU). The EL6259C simplifies this high-frequency design and enables drive OEM¹s to quickly bring next generation products to market."

Evaluation module boards are available, with production shipments for the EL6257C available now, and the EL6259C in January.
