Elantec Semiconductor Announces Two New Smaller Package Four Ampere Step-Down DC:DC Regulators
The EL7563CRE and EL7564CRE in small HTSSOP28 packages broaden Elantec's growing line of continuous current DC:DC regulators
MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA, December 5, 2001 -- Elantec Semiconductor, Inc. (NASDAQ: ELNT), a leader in high-performance analog integrated circuits, today introduced two new step-down DC:DC Regulators with synchronous, integrated power FET transistors in small HTSSOP28 packages. The new HTSSOP28 package provides more than a 50 percent reduction in printed circuit board area, improved thermal performance, and better efficiency compared with the original DC:DC regulators, in Elantec's SOL20 package, as well as competitive products.
Elantec's EL7564CRE operates from input voltages of 4.5V to +5.5V and provides regulated output of 1.0V to +3.8V, while the EL7563CRE operates from input voltages of 3.0V to +3.6V, and provides an output of 1.0V to +2.5V. Both devices operate over an ambient temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees C. Other features for both products include multiple supply start-up tracking, integrated current sensing, cycle-by-cycle current limiting, over-temperature shutdown, soft-start, and under-voltage lockout.
The new HTSSOP28 package offers a thermal resistance from junction-to-ambient of better than 30 degrees C per watt, which is 30 percent lower than the original SOL20 package. The improved thermal performance allows these devices to operate at higher continuous current without requiring forced convection cooling. In a typical application requiring a 3.3V, 3A regulated supply, the EL7564CRE can operate at 85 degrees C with no forced convection cooling. In comparison, the EL7564CM (SOL20 package) would require a modest airflow to operate above 65 degrees C ambient for the same load conditions.
Richard Powers, Elantec's Director of Strategic Marketing for Power Products, said, "The EL7563CRE and EL7564CRE extend Elantec's strong leadership position in low voltage DC:DC regulators. Elantec now offers step-down (buck) regulators rated at continuous currents of 8A, 6A, 4A, 2A, and 1A, which satisfy a broad range of system requirements. With Elantec's increasingly broad product line, design engineers can select the regulator which precisely satisfies their application requirements."
Elantec offers its customers applications support, demo boards, sample devices and technical assistance to assure that the customer achieves maximum performance - with minimum design effort.
Pricing at 1,000-piece quantities for the EL7563CRE or the EL7564CRE is $3.70 each, and decreases with higher volumes. Both devices are available now with production quantities available within four weeks.
