Elantec Semiconductor Announces New High Efficiency Step-Up DC:DC Regulator
The EL7512C generates an output voltage from +5 to +16 Volts at 300 to 500 mA load current, while operating from a supply as low as +2 Volts
MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA, June 21, 2001 -- Elantec Semiconductor, Inc. (NASDAQ: ELNT), a leader in high-performance analog integrated circuits, today announced a new single-chip synchronous boost DC:DC Regulator with integrated power FET transistors. The EL7512CY is targeted at TFT -LCD displays, digital cameras, and portable products such as test instruments and PDAs that are powered from a single Li-Ion or multiple NiMH battery cells. The EL7512CY can be operated as high as 1.2MHz switching frequency, which makes it an attractive device for powering ADSL, USB modems.
Elantec's EL7512CY operates from input voltages from +2 up to +15 Volts, over an ambient temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees C. The device is packaged in a compact MSOP10 package and requires few external passive components to provide a complete DC:DC Step-Up (Boost) Converter. When used to generate a +5 Volt output from a +3.3 Volt input, the EL7512CY can provide from 100 to 500 mA of load current, while operating at up to 90% efficiency. With the device operating from a +5 Volt input and the output set for +12 Volts, the EL7512CY can provide from 100 to 300 mA of load current, again, at up to 90% efficiency.
The desired output voltage is easily fixed to the desired value by two external resistors. Other features include a shut-down mode whereby the device only draws 3 microAmps of supply current, an external enable control to turn the device on/off, and a low battery output signal (LBO) to warn when the input falls below a prescribed level.
Richard Powers, Elantec's Director of Strategic Marketing for Power Products stated, "The EL7512CY represents Elantec's first DC:DC Step-Up (Boost) Regulator and will optimally satisfy the requirements of TFT-LCD displays and ADSL modems. When combined with Elantec's DC:DC Step-Down (Buck) Regulators, a complete, highly efficient DC power solution can be provided to our customers. In addition to the excellent performance of these devices, Elantec offers its customers a high degree of applications support, demo boards, sample parts and technical assistance to assure that the customer achieves the maximum performance possible."
Pricing at 1,000-piece quantities for the EL7512CY in the 10-pin MSOP package is $1.42 and decreases with higher volumes. The EL7512CY is available to sample on the demo boards now with production quantities available within 8 weeks. The data sheet, application brief and demo boards are available now.
