Elantec Semiconductor Announces Its First Multi-Output, Application-Specific DC:DC Regulators For TFT/LCD Flat Panel Displays

EL7580C and EL7581C are fully integrated, multiple-output DC:DC voltage regulators, which provide the highest power, best thermal performance and a wide operating range to optimally meet the requirements of large, thin-film transistor (TFT) liquid crystal displays (LCD)

MILPITAS, CALIFORNIA, January 30, 2002 -- Elantec Semiconductor, Inc. (NASDAQ: ELNT), a leader in high-performance analog integrated circuits, today announced two new multi-output, DC:DC Regulator ICs with integrated FET boost regulator, Vcom regulator, and two regulated charge pumps. The new EL7580C and EL7581C are designed for use in 14- to 20-inch-and-larger TFT/LCD monitors, LCD notebook displays, and LCD TVs, as well as portable products such as Pocket PCs and PDAs.

The integrated FET boost regulator in both the EL7580C and EL7581C provides the TFT/LCD column driver power, generating +12V at up to 700mA continuous current from a +5V input, with a typical efficiency of 90%. The boost regulator can provide regulated voltages ranging from +5V to +18V. A second linear regulator provides the supply for the common plate of the TFT/LCD panel, generating the Vcom voltage ranging from +2V to +13V, with a maximum continuous current of 100mA. A pair of low-power, charge pump, control circuits provides both a regulated positive output voltage between +5V to +40V, and a regulated negative output voltage between -40V to -5V. The positive and negative charge pump voltages provide the TFT/LCD row driver power. The EL7580CL provides all four of these regulated outputs; the EL7581CRE does not include the Vcom amplifier.

By integrating all of the TFT/LCD regulator functions into a single chip, these Elantec multi-output regulators reduce component count, minimize printed circuit board area, and lower the overall cost of the regulated power supplies. In addition to the high performance and excellent value offered by these devices, Elantec provides superior applications support, customized demo boards, sample devices, and technical assistance to assure that customers achieve maximum performance - with minimum design effort."

The EL7580CL is packaged in a 32-pin LPP package, and the EL7581CRE is packaged in a 20-pin HTSSOP packaging. Pricing at 1,000-piece quantities for the EL7580CL is $2.90 each and for the EL7581CRE is $2.55 each. Both ICs operate over an ambient temperature range of -40 to +85 degrees C, and are available to sample on demo boards now. Production quantities will be available within 8 weeks.
